Feedback wanted on concepts for design of new City Hall

In response to public feedback, the City Council has authorized work with ARC Architects to create six design concepts on two potential sites for Carnation’s new city hall.  In the linked PDF, you’ll find conceptual renderings for comment and feedback.  The Design Detail & Task Team wants to hear from you about each of the six concepts.  What things do you like about each?  What things do you dislike about each?  Is there some combination of ideas from multiple renderings that you think would work better together?  Now is your opportunity to weigh in on what you think Carnation’s future City Hall should look like.

Tolt Avenue CBD Improvements Project Construction in 2021

It’s been a long road to this point, but after many years of working on the Tolt Avenue Central Business District rebuild and design of State Highway 203, we’ve finally opened and awarded the contractor bid. The COVID-19 Pandemic and other design delays pushed us back, but we’re excited to begin construction in 2021.

Seattle Public Utilities Message to the Residents of Carnation

To the Residents of Carnation,

Seattle Public Utilities looks forward to attending the City of Carnation’s community meeting on Monday, August 3, when we will share what we know about the Tolt Dam Warning System’s false alarm that sounded for almost 40 minutes on Tuesday.

We sincerely apologize for the confusion and fear caused by the false alarm. We will address your concerns and share with you what information we have as to what happened.

On Tuesday, when we determined within a few minutes that there was no breach of the Tolt Dam, staff attempted to disable the alarm but the computer system would not allow it. It took a few tries before the alarm stopped sounding.

We have heard from many of you in the community, upset and frustrated by what you experienced.

At the meeting, you will hear from us about the steps we are taking to prevent something like this from happening again. We will also talk about how we are working with our partner agencies like the City of Carnation to improve communications.

Your safety and wellbeing are of the highest priority to us. Dam safety monitoring was never interrupted during the incident and we continue to monitor the dam 24/7, using technology such as cameras and sensors installed along the Tolt Dam.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Sincerely,

Seattle Public Utilities

Letter to the Community, June 2020

The recent events of the past weeks have affected all of us in the community and nation very deeply.  Your City Council and local King County Sheriff's Office strongly condemn the actions that led to George Floyd's death. The tactics utilized by the Officers in Minnesota were extreme and highlight the continued inequality for people of color in our country, as well as the importance of proper police training and accountability.
